Heart disease is one of the greatest health concerns facing our nation today. It is a highly preventable condition that exists in the body long before you experience symptoms. Because of this, heart disease is called the “silent killer,” and is consistently the number one cause of death for both men and women. Most people realize they have heart disease after they have a heart attack. In the United States, someone has a heart attack about every 40 seconds.
About 70% of people who have their first heart attack first have high blood pressure. High blood pressure, or hypertension, affects 1 out of 3 Americans, and typically has no outward warning signs in the early stages. Late stage signs include a lack of energy, dizziness, fainting, ringing in the ears, difficulty finding words, shortness of breath, vision changes, heaviness in the legs, or muscle cramps at night.
The medical approach to high blood pressure includes prescribing medications. Some suppress naturally occurring chemicals in the blood stream, while others block receptors that allow those chemical messengers to function. Some examples include diuretics, ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, and angiotensin II inhibitors. About 70% of people with hypertension use these drugs to try and control their condition. Unfortunately, this approach carries several side effects, including rash, hives, light sensitivity, numbness in the hands and feet, weakness, depression, impotence, confusion, joint aches, muscle spasms, and more. Other, non-medical methods include tobacco cessation, healthy diet, exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and decreasing alcohol.
But even in the face of these interventions—which most people engage in—still 1 out of 3 people suffer with high blood pressure and face the advent of heart disease. Why?
Because none of these interventions address the function of the master control system for the body—the Nervous System!
There are clusters of neurons in the brainstem that control and modulate the rate and rhythm of the heartbeat, which have a huge impact on blood pressure. By testing your nervous system and identifying areas that are over-stressed, a chiropractor can deliver a gentle, specific, corrective adjustment that aids in decreasing the tension and stress in the brain stem. Specific adjustments using the spine as the point of access corrects any over-stimulation or under-stimulation of the nerve centers in these areas.
Chiropractic neither adds to nor takes from anything in the body in order to achieve the health and function you seek. By empowering the body’s natural blood pressure monitoring systems and removing interference from the body’s control center, you achieve balance, proper function, and better health!
In a landmark study involving 50 people with high blood pressure, nothing more than a specific adjustment to the Atlas vertebrae in the upper neck (near the brainstem) significantly lowered blood pressure for these individuals. This is just one of many studies that has shown the effectiveness of chiropractic care in lowering and maintaining ideal blood pressure—without life altering medications!
