Unlocking Thyroid Health: How Chiropractic Care Enhances Thyroid Function

When people think of the chiropractor, many think of neck or back pain.  They imagine a man twisting and contorting their patients in all kinds of positions to get a “crack” or a po.” to feel better. While chiropractic care is an excellent non-invasive and drug-free way to free a person from debilitating pain, there is so much more to it.

Chiropractic care takes a whole-body approach to care.  We focus not only on symptoms but addressing the underlying cause of the problem.  The goal is to help the body heal as completely as possible, attain the highest level of function possible, and prevent re-emergence of any problems or concerns.  This results in an optimal level of health and well-being.

What chiropractic care does not do is treat a specific disease or condition.  Not only is that outside the scope of a chiropractor’s practice, it is simply impossible to do when approaching the body holistically.  When the body is functioning optimally, it is better able to heal and repair itself on all levels.

Take the thyroid for instance.  Chiropractors do not treat thyroid conditions.  However, people with thyroid conditions get tremendous benefit from regular chiropractic care.  Chiropractors are doctors of the nervous system and seek to improve nervous system function.  This includes the brain, spinal cord, and spinal and peripheral nerves.  The thyroid is controlled by the brain.  The brain sends signals to the thyroid gland, telling it exactly what to do.  When there is an interruption in the nerve pathways (we call that a subluxation), the thyroid is unable to receive appropriate input from the brain; likewise, the brain is unable to receive proper feedback from the thyroid.  Thus, a cascade of thyroid dysfunction ensues.

When a chiropractor adjusts the spine, the nervous system begins to function better.  The area that directly affects the thyroid is the lower cervical region, specifically C7.  The upper cervical complex also plays a role, due to its proximity to the brain.  By correcting subluxations at these levels, a chiropractor facilitates better communication between the brain and these levels of the spine and spinal cord.  That is the goal of the chiropractor. The indirect benefit is improved thyroid function, as it is again able to receive the input it needs to do its job again.

Is this really possible?  Yes.  By addressing nervous system dysfunction, people with thyroid conditions can see improvements in their thyroid health and function. For instance, a study published in 2017 explored the connection between hypothyroidism, irritable bowel syndrome, and spinal health. A 34-year-old female saw significant improvement in her thyroid function and IBS after just 2 months of chiropractic care. She was able to discontinue her thyroid medication completely after a thyroid function test confirmed resolution of hypothyroidism. Another study from 2018 saw a 50-year-old man reduce his need for synthetic thyroid medication after receiving chiropractic care.

The above-mentioned studies involved the use of the Torque Release Technique™ (TRT), the primary technique Dr. Druckenmiller uses at Rising Chiropractic.  Dr. Druckenmiller is Certified Advanced Proficiency in TRT and is the only TRT practitioner in Evans, Georgia.  She has helped many who have not only thyroid issues, but also those with autoimmunity, fibromyalgia, neuropathy, and many other health conditions.  The mission of Rising Chiropractic is to help people rise above their limitations and trust their innate power to live in health.
