Chiropractic and Pregnancy

A nervous system that isn’t functioning at its peak can cause multiple issues relating to fertility and pregnancy. With appropriate alignment of the spine, the nervous system can optimize its natural function and best coordinate all aspects of the reproductive process.

Pre-conception chiropractic care helps the healthy body control uterine function and regulate its own menstruation, without the use of birth control or other pharmaceuticals. By ensuring the body is in its best physical condition to receive a baby, it increases the chances of conception and a healthy pregnancy to follow.

William’s Obstetrics tells us that difficult labor is caused by inadequate uterine function, pelvic imbalance, and baby mal-presentation.  Doctors of chiropractic are seeing that sacral adjustments may improve uterine function, balance the pelvis, and reduce tension to pelvic muscles and ligaments.  When balance is restored to the mother’s pelvis, her uterus and pelvis function better.  This reduces undue stress to mom’s ligaments and muscles, making pregnancy and birth more comfortable.  Pelvic balance also allows optimal space for baby to grow throughout pregnancy and line up in the best possible position for birth.

Regular chiropractic care during pregnancy can keep the nervous system function at its best, allowing it to control and coordinate all systems in the body.  This may help avoid or alleviate many of the secondary symptoms of pregnancy, such as morning sickness, aches, pains, and swelling.

During labor and delivery, mothers who have received consistent chiropractic care have said the birth was much less traumatic, with well-timed contractions and a far easier and shorter delivery.

Post-natal chiropractic care can help to correct pelvic distortion caused during childbirth, helping a mother’s energy return quickly and last longer.

Newborns

Birth is a traumatic experience for both mom and baby.  During delivery, there is a great deal of physical stress put on the baby’s spine, which can lead to misalignment (subluxation).  This misalignment causes interference in the nervous system, which can contribute to any number of health issues, such as difficulty breastfeeding, colic, asthma, digestive issues, frequent illness, and some behavioral problems.

Chiropractic care at this vital stage of a baby’s life can address that interference in the nervous system.  Gentle adjustments allow the baby’s nervous system to quickly recover and self-heal, which in turn contributes to proper development of all systems of the body.  This leads to a happy and healthy child who will grow into a happy and health adult.
